How To Program A Universal Remote?

There are three simple common ways in order to setup or else to configure your favorite universal remote control. Such as; Keycode, Programming Via Universal Remote Code Search and Manual Setup. With these three methods you can simply operate your devices with your universal remote.

Before you start you have to keep the remote control into the pairing mode by holding some combo of the Device, Power, and other buttons. There after you have to enter the codes from manufacturer’s code sheet, either included or else online. However the instructions might be different from manufacturer to manufacturer; you can check out the manual or their support page for the exact suitable steps.

Basically the universal remote control get it simpler for controlling your tv and any other components. Of course there are some common steps for how to set one up to manage a variety of devices. Let’s get started. But before you proceed keep in mind that a particular connecting options and steps might be varied with each of the universal remote control brand and model. Here are the examples of options that you might see and steps which may be required.

1) Direct Code Entry Method

Here is the simplest path to pair/connect any universal remote is to enter a code which can identifies the product that you would like to control. The working codes may provided through a “code sheet” or the web page wherever the codes are being listed by the brand and type of device such as (TV, Blu-ray Disc player, Home Theater Receiver, Cable Box, VCRs, and sometimes media streamers).

  • “Turn your device On” that you would like to control
  • Tap and Hold the appropriate button on your remote control (here some of the models needed which you press a setup button before tapping on the device button). However the LEDs for the device and power buttons would light up.

Note: Even though the buttons may be labeled for a particular device, however you can use them for any of the compatible device; so that you should remember which one shall be corresponded to the device you are controlling.

  • Now with a device button on a remote held down, enter the code for a brand of your device. If a brand has more than a code, then you can start with the first one. Suppose, as you do enter the code, the power button on the remote shall be turned off.
  • After you’re entering the code, you have to keep on pressing hold down the device button. Suppose, if the control’s power button would light up and then stays on, then you have entered the correct code there.
  • Suppose if you observe that a power button blinks for several times, then make sure that you’ve entered the correct code. But each and every time you are unsuccessful, at that time you need to repeat the code entry step for each code until you find a working code.
  • Finally if you’re programmed and connected, you can see if the universal remote controls its basic functions to your device. let’s say, a universal remote should turn a TV off and on, change the volume, channel, and source input.

Note: If you’re using Direct Code Entry, write the successful code(s) in your user guide for future reference.

2) Auto Code Search

If you do not have an access to the particular code for your using brand or any type of device that you would like to control then don’t worry here you have a best method to find the code and pair it that is Auto Code Search. By using this method the remote shall be searching via its database, testing several codes simultaneously. Here you can check an example of likely steps:

  • “Turn Your TV or another device On” First…that you would like to control.
  • Tap and release the “Device” button on your remote that is associated with the product which you would like to control (such as TV…etc) As we mentioned previously, you can use any device with any of the labeled buttons—remember to write it down for future reference.
  • Now Tap on “Device” button one more time, as well as the “Power” button simultaneously. Now the power button shall be turned off and then come it comes back on again.
  • Now release both the buttons
  • After that Tap and release the Play Button on your remote control, and there after you have to wait for few seconds and wait and see if you are trying device turns off. If it is so, that means it has found the correct code. Suppose, if your device is still ON, you have to press the button again and then go via the waiting and turn-off process. You should repeat it until your device goes to power off mode.
  • In the next step, press and release the Reverse button on your remote control for every two seconds until your device turns ON. When it finally does, the remote has successfully been searched for the correct code.
  • Now Tap on Stop button so that the code will be saved.
  • Test some more functions on the remote and see if they work for your device

What if you want to unpair then make sure to read this article once how do i reprogram/unpair a universal remote?.

3) Brand Code Search

As we’ve used in the auto code search you may allowed to narrow down your search for just a single brand, so this method is similar to auto code search. Of course this search comes in handy if the brand gives more than one code. Here you can check out the steps.

  • Turn your device on first that you’d like to control (TV, VCR, DVD, DVR, satellite receiver, or cable box).
  • Now locate your brand code from the list that is provided with your remote.
  • In the next step Press and Hold “Device” button that you would like to Pair. (TV, DVD, Aux, etc.) Whenever the LED for that button turn on and remains on, keep holding down that button.
  • During holding the device button on your remote, you have to press and hold the power button, so the power button should light up.
  • You can release the power and device button at a time. The device button should be remain on (if not, repeat the steps).
  • Now by using your universal remote’s keypad, you have to enter the first code of that brand. So the LED light for that device button must then remain on.
  • There are after you have to press and release the power button repeatedly until your trying to control a device turns off. If the device turns off, the remote has been found the correct code.
  • Now Tap on the Stop button on your universal remote control so that the code shall be Saved  (the LED light will turn off).
  • You can use the different buttons (such as volume..etc) to see if your remote can now control the device or not.
  • Suppose, if your device does not turn off and the LED light blinks for about four times. you’ve exhausted the codes for that brand and need to use another programming method for pairing.

Manual Code Search

Instead of using the remote scan through all, or brand, codes automatically, you may also be able to program the remote by having it check each code one simultaneously. In any case, you have to keep in mind that this procedure can take some more time since there are so many codes. So be patient….These are the steps to initiate this option:

  • First of all “Turn on” your TV or an another device that you would like to control.
  • There after you have to press and hold the corresponding  Device and Power options on your universal remote control simultaneously. Wait until the power button comes on, and then release both the buttons.
  • Now point out the remote control at the TV or to another device, press the Power button on the remote control and wait for 2 seconds.
  • Suppose, if the power on your tv or device has been turned off then the remote has found the correct code. Press Stop to save the code.
  • But if your device is failed to turned off, then make sure to press the Power button again so that the remote tests the following code in the database. Perform this step until it finds a code.
